Honouliuli Event

In 1943, under Executive Order 9066, the US Army constructed the Honouliuli Internment Camp near Ewa, Oahu, for the detention of approximately 300 Hawai’i residents, most of whom were American citizens of Japanese ancestry, during WWII.

The Sons and Daughters of the 442 RCT hosted an audio-visual presentation about the Honouliuli Internment Camp experience, presented by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii Resource Center. The Sons and Daughters of the 100th, MIS, and 1399 were invited to this social event.

Joint Memorial Service 2009

The Joint Memorial Service (JMS) organized by the Oahu AJA Veterans Council was held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific on Sunday, November 27, 2009. The JMS honors those who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) and the 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion.

2010 Joint Memorial Service, SD Update

The Oahu AJA Veterans Council’s fifth annual Joint Memorial Service will be held at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, September 26, 2010, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

The keynote speaker will be Maj. Gen. Robert G.F. Lee, adjutant general for the state of Hawaii since January 2003. Maj. Gen. Lee, a University of Hawaii graduate, was commissioned in May 1971. His career included command of the Army Reserve’s 100th Battalion/442nd Infantry from September 1988 to March 1991. Now, as state adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Lee directs the Hawaii Army and Air National Guard, State Civil Defense and the state Office of Veterans Services. (more…)

The 5th Annual Joint Memorial Services was held on Sunday, September 26, 2010, at the National Cemetery of the Pacific. This event is coordinated each year by the Oahu AJA Veterans Council to commemorate the four AJA military units of WWII: the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd RCT, the Military Intelligence Service, and the 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion.

Live with Honor, Die with Dignity

There was a special screening of the documentary film, “Live with Honor, Die with Dignity”, in Honolulu on September 10, 2010. Over 350 veterans, family and friends showed up for the event, sponsored by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. A special guest appearance was made by famed actor George Takei to introduce the film. Jake Shimabukuro, composed and played the song, “Go For Broke” on his ukulele via a video presentation at the beginning of the event.

Community Exhibit Honors the Legacy of the Veterans

Sons, daughters and friends have refreshed the “Honoring the Legacy” Exhibit at Central Pacific Bank in downtown Honolulu.

The AJA Veterans Exhibit Committee include sons, daughters and friends of the veterans from the 100th Infantry Battalion (100th), the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (442nd), and the Military Intelligence Service (MIS). The Exhibit Committee creates exhibits on the four principal AJA units – the 100th, the 442nd, the MIS, and the 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion (1399th). Alvin Yoshitomi and Eileen Sakai are the 442nd Sons & Daughters on the Exhibit Committee.

100th Infantry Battalion***Annual Banquet

“Thanks For The Memories” was this year’s theme for the veterans of the 100th as they celebrated their 69th Anniversary Banquet. The event was held on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at the Honolulu Country Club. Approximately 300 veterans, family members and friends participated in the event. The program featured a video presentation on the history of the Club 100 Clubhouse and past memories from the younger generation growing up with the veterans. Dr. Cass Nakasone, a grandson, gave the keynote address.

Congratulations to the 100th’s Banquet Committee for a job well done!

2011 Joint Memorial Service

The sixth annual Joint Memorial Service was held on Sunday, September 25, 2011, at the National Memorial Cemetery fo the Pacific. The annual event is sponsored by the AJA Veterans Council. It recognizes and honors all four World War II nisei veteran units: The 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Military Intelligence Service and the 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion. The program was highlighted by Lt. Gen. Francis Wiercinski, who gave the memorial address to a crowd of over 400.

Oahu AJA Veterans Council 8th Annual Joint Memorial Service

 

The Oahu AJA Veterans Council 8th Annual Joint Memorial Service was held on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.  Barbara J. Tanabe served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the event.  The program included Col. Gene Castagnetti, USMC, Ret. Superintendent, NMCP who gave the “Welcome” and Brigadier General James T. Hirai, U.S. Army, Ret. was the Keynote Speaker.  Veterans from the numerous veterans groups were in attendance.

We would like to thank Chairman Byrnes Yamashita for his superb coordination of this event, it was a great success.  Our mahalo to all who assisted in this service.

Ceremony At Biffontaine

October 19, 2013 – Biffontaine, France Over 300 gathered, including sons and daughters, family and friends of the 442, to celebrate the 69th anniversary of the liberation of the town of Biffontaine. The ceremony took place in the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, at the place call Terminal 6, where the battle of the Lost Battalion took place. Veterans Day onboard the USS Missouri

November 11, 2013 – Honolulu, Hawaii. The Battleship Missouri Memorial hosted a ceremony to recognize the 70th Anniversary of the Nisei Veterans of World War II. The event was held on deck of the Missouri and was attended by veterans, families and friends. Veterans, Sons & Daughters, Granddaughters and Grandsons and Family and Friends – The 11th Annual Joint Memorial Service (JMS) which is open to the public was held on Sunday, September 25, 2016, at 10 am at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. The JMS is held to honor the Japanese American Soldiers who served in WWII, specifically, those in the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Military Intelligence Service, and the 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion. Fighting Two Wars AJA Veterans Tribute

By Gail Nishimura, S&D It was a very interesting afternoon.  To see and talk to many veterans and their families was really something that I will remember for a long time. There were so many people who came out to honor the veterans and the slide show that was playing in the background was an additional highlight.  It was nice to see my uncle’s picture when it popped up.  Most of the veterans posed for the official picture, I think this was a big challenge for the photographers.  But the photo came out really nice! Third Annual Wahiawa War Memorial Ceremony July 16, 2017

The Third Annual Wahiawa War Memorial Ceremony will be held on July 16 to commemorate the 21 Wahiawa veterans who gave their lives during World War II, and recognize their families for the sacrifices they made during the war. The event, which will begin at 4 p.m. at Wahiawa District Park in the Hale Okipa building, is free and open to the public. The history of the soldiers and community members who worked to build the first city swimming pool in 1949 also will be shared. 75th Anniversary Banquet “Diamond Jubilee” of the 100th Infantry Battalion

The Sons and Daughters of the 442nd were well represented at the 100th Battalion’s 75th Anniversary Banquet, which was held on Sunday, July 23, 10am-2pm, at the Pomaikai Ballroom at Dole Cannery. We had two full tables – including officers Grace Fujii, Juanita Allen and Shirley Igarashi, and members Gwen and Clayton Fujie, Glenn and Edean Goya, Lynn Heirakuji, Phyllis Hironaka, Anita Nihei and Ken Akinaka. Exhibit Announcement: Children’s Messages of Peace and MIS Veterans at the 100th Veterans Clubhouse

Announcement from the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans Club An exhibit of Children’s Expressions of Peace from the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum is open from February 1 to March 5, 2018 at the 100th Inf Bn Veterans Clubhouse. The exhibit will be open on weekdays only to March 5 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. It will be closed on weekends. Parking is at the Clubhouse or on the street. The exhibit includes stunningly beautiful artwork, poetry and essays by students in Okinawa reflecting the reality of War on their homeland and their hopes for peace. On June 25, 2018, the California State Senate will be passing a resolution honoring the 75th anniversary of the formation of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The Go For Broke National Education Center wishes to extend an invitation to our veterans, families and friends in Hawaii in hopes that some can join us in Sacramento for this event.

13th Annual Joint Memorial Service

The 13th Annual Joint Memorial Service (JMS), honoring Japanese American Soldiers in World War II, will be held at 9:30 am on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii.

The theme for this celebration is: “Remembering their sacrifice by challenging ourselves.”

Tom Coffman, author of books on the history and political development of Hawai’i, will be our keynote speaker.

Nisei veterans and their personal care attendants who would like to arrange for transportation to attend this ceremony should call 949-7997 (Mon-Thu) by September 14, 2018.

We hope that all Nisei veterans who can join us will take advantage of this free service.

Bonne Fete Nationale!

La Légion d’honneur medal conferment ceremony by the French government for six American Japanese veterans of World War II on June 1, 2019 was trés magnifique! The audience, Governor David Ige, Mrs. Dawn Amano-Ige, both, whose fathers served with the 100th Infantry Battalion, many members of the Consular Corps of Hawaii and a large contingent of family and friends of the veterans, was very pleased to witness the rare historic knighthood and medal pinning, by Consul General Emmanuel Lebrun-Damiens of San Francisco, bestowed on our six courageous heroes seated on stage. 77th Anniversary of Bruyères Liberation

On October 17th, 2021, the people of Bruyères, France held a celebration to honor the soldiers of the 100th/442nd who liberated their town from German occupation 77 years ago. Additionally, we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Bruyères and Honolulu sister city relationship.
