Surprise Birthday Party for Pvt. Thomas N. Goto
Content: Pvt. Thomas N. Goto of Hq. Bty. 522nd F. A, celebrated his birthday last night with a cake sent to him from Hilo, Hawaii. The sender of the cake, Miss Haruko N. Matsuura is an instructor at the Intermediate School in the Islands. She wrote to the Hattiesburg American asking as a special favor that arrangements be made to have a cake delivered to Pvt. Goto on his birthday.
Pvt. Goto was most pleasantly surprised when he was given the huge, beautifully decorated cake saying, “Gee, she sure did surprise me with it!” Not having expected any remembrance on his birthday, Pvt. Goto was a little doubtful at first if the cake was really his. Some pictures were taken so that he will be able to send Miss Matsuura a photo of the cake.
Pvt. Goto is a graduate of the Hilo high school. He studied electricity at the Honolulu Technical school and loves to tinker with anything mechanical. Before the war he did electrical work and as a sideline fixed up his friends’ electrical and mechanical fixtures and equipment. After Dec. 7, 1941, Pvt. Goto worked as an electrician and refrigeration technician for U. S. Eng. Dept. He volunteered to work for Uncle Sam and was happy and proud when he was accepted. This is the first time he has ever been to the mainland and having read and heard so much about the large buildings the U. S. boast, he was a little disappointed when he did not see many of them on his way to Camp Shelby. Although he likes it here, he claims “There's nothing like Hawaii! I'll take that any time.!”
