From Hattiesburg American July 15, 1943
Sgt. Kazu Nishimoto says that Kauai, Hawaii, is “The Garden Island”; like the Garden of Eden, he interpreted. Sgt. Nishimoto is with Co. A, 442nd Inf. It has not been long since the Sergeant recovered from a blossoming case of measles.
Not only a birthday cake, but flowers, too, were wired from Hawaii by relatives of Pvt Hironobu Hino 442nd Med. Det., to celebrate his birthday, July 15th.
Sgt. Yori Wada, formerly in the office of Major Oland Russell, Headquarters 442nd C. T., has been transferred to the Medical Detachment.
Lt. Robert (Bob) Guthrie, Los Angeles, likes New Orleans and goes there whenever he can. Lt. Guthrie is with the 1st Btn., 442nd Inf.
Lt. George Martin is instructor of Co. A, 442nd Inf. Lt. Martin has cause to be proud of the recent record made by his company in machine gun firing. 95% expert was the score. Lt. Martin is from Englewood, New Jersey.
1st Sgt. Kenich Hirose from Hawaii, says he has been “up on the mainland for four years.” Sgt. Hirose is in the office of Co. A, 442nd Combat Team.
Pvt. Mike Masaoka is the new assistant in the public relations office of the 442nd Combat Team. Salt Lake City, Utah is his home.
Lt. R. J. Lowell, Co. A, 442nd Inf., can hardly wait until July 16, for it is the date his furlough goes into effect. Pittsburgh, Pa., is Lt. Lowell's destination.

The Hattiesburg American was founded in 1897 as a weekly newspaper, the Hattiesburg Progress.[2] In 1907, the Hattiesburg Progress was acquired by The Hattiesburg Daily News. When the U.S. entered World War I in 1917, the newspaper was renamed the Hattiesburg American.
The Hattiesburg American was purchased by the Harmon family in the 1920s and was sold to the Hederman family in 1960.[2] Gannett acquired the newspaper in 1982.
